2019
2019, what a year! This year, the Greenwich Rugby team was faced with the toughest competition we have seen in the history of the program, playing 9 different nationally ranked opponents. We started off our season with St. Anthony’s from Long Island. That first victory was a great way to start off the season. On April 6th, we played our annual Xavier game. Although we weren’t able to secure the victory, we learned that we were definitely able to compete with top ranked teams around the country. In mid April, we headed down to Virginia for a trip to the Gonzaga tournament. We played all 4 games very competitively, coming out with a loss in the final against Gonzaga, who held the national championship trophy at the time. After returning to Greenwich, we beat Aspetuck in a hard fought match, where both teams needed a win to stay in the top tier. This important win led us to the National Tournament Salt Lake City, Utah. Our first opponents was against the #2 ranked team in the country, Herriman. We played them very competitively, but we were unable to come out on top, losing by a mere 4 points. In the end, Herriman reached the final, so we knew we had what it took to succeed in the tournament. Next, we played a very strong Penn team from Indiana, who were extremely physical and structured. Another tight, last minute defeat, losing by 3 points. Lastly, we played a #8 ranked Kahuku, from Hawai’i. Although we were not able to come out with a victory at the nationals, we held our heads high, and came back to Connecticut ready to compete for the state championship. Staples gave us a fight in the semi-final, and a tough Aspetuck team narrowly beat us in the final. We used the defeat in the final as a motivator during the off-season, and we will come back stronger than ever in 2020. Go Cards.
