2009
2009 was almost a carbon copy of 2008 without the tour to Argentina. The team substituted the tour with a weekend down to Washington DC for the annual Cherry Blossom Tournament sponsored by Washington Rugby-thanks to Koki Mori and Ryan Nearing, former players, who helped run the tournament. Greenwich had the breakout weekend we were looking for and won the championship by beating two tough Canadian sides and two American sides for the title. Captain, Justin Warzoha led a bunch of over-achievers back to the Northeast Championships once again. This would mark five consecutive Northeast Finals. Highlights of the season were the Cherry Blossom victory as well as one of our best victories over Fairfield Prep at home on senior night by running by the Prep squad 67-1. Coach Porter, Coach Petrone, and newcomer, Luke Gawronski completed the coaching squad that could not have been any prouder of how these boys competed and improved all season long. Though we were upset we could not get back to the Nationals, the boys took solace by repeating as State Champions with impressive wins over Darien, Fairfield High, and Fairfield Prep. This was certainly a championship year for Greenwich. Our Hall of Fame is happy to induct our Rugby Mom for the past nineteen years, Susan Person. Her love of the players and respect of the team, and the program are what has helped build this program to what it is today!
