2012
2012 – The highlight of the season – Friday, April 27th – WE BEAT XAVIER! This has not been accomplished since 1999. We accomplished our main goal for the season. What great feeling! The bleachers were packed with fans, the support and spirit was exhilarating! Everyone burst out of the stands at the end of the game to congratulate and celebrate the boys’ momentous victory. Cardinal pride was gushing!
Our team this year was incredibly talented. Our depth carried us through any player injuries we faced. According to the process in the past, our team should definitely have been going to Nationals this year, with a very promising chance of winning. They changed the process this year and invited teams from their last year records. Bad timing. The boys know in their hearts how good they are. We look forward to 2013 when we will have our opportunity to really show our talent to the nation. People everywhere are talking about Greenwich Rugby. There’s a spotlight on us now.
The leadership was strong. The captains, Tomas Gowland, Doug Brown and Matthew Diddel were excellent role models and kept the team well bonded. Joe Kelly was in his 2nd year as head coach, and this year marked the 10th anniversary for John Porter as Freshman coach, and Luke Gawronski came back to coach the forwards. New to the program this year is Glenn Fox, an alumni player for GHS and now plays for the NYAC, who coached the backs. The combination of the 4 coaches made for a solid well-rounded coaching team.
Winning was contagious for all the teams in the program this year. Every team at every level wanted to win every game. Most games the opponent was not able to score. The A team scored 750 points and lost only 62 points for the entire season. The program’s totals overall (before the State Championship game) were: 28 Wins, 1 Tie, and 2 Losses. This result is very impressive. The A team is going into the State Cup tournament undefeated. The odds are definitely in our favor to dominate Fairfield Prep and secure the state title.
This year we honor Coach John Porter for his outstanding 10 years working with the Greenwich Rugby program. John is thought of as the backbone of the program. His passion and commitment to the players and the sport of rugby shows in everything he does. He is the go to guy for answers and the net in the cracks of such a large program that keeps the players from falling through. Thank you John Porter for all you do!
