HEAD
COACH, STEVE LAPHAM

Steve graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in Physical Education where he also played basketball and rugby. He also received his masters in Health from Southern and earned his sixth year from the University of New England. Coach Lapham taught PE and coached basketball and baseball at St. Joseph’s High School in Trumbull and then began teaching and coaching at Greenwich in 1990. Steve has coached rugby for eighteen years at GHS and has coached volleyball for sixteen years. Coach Lapham has compiled a rugby coaching record of 176 wins and 92 losses and 6 ties. He has helped lead the Cardinals to Five New England titles, Three East Coast final appearances, Four Northeast final appearances, Six National Championship appearances including a second place finish in 1999. Greenwich has also won the two state title championships that have been held. Coach Lapham has directed six major tours around the world for the Cardinals. Steve resides in Trumbull, CT with his wife Alicia and their three sons Garrett, Jack and Sam.
ASSISTANT
COACH, JOHN PORTER
John first played rugby as a freshman at Tufts University in 1970. While studying in England as a junior John joined London New Zealand RFC, then returned to captain Tufts in his senior year. John also has played for Charles River RFC in Boston, Fairfield University and the Connecticut Yankees. Besides Greenwich High, the club closest to his heart is Perranporth in Cornwall, England. During the GHS tour of England in 2005 the team visited and trained on the pitch where John played his last match. John has taught at Eagle Hill School in Greenwich since 1979, and for many years coached soccer, basketball and baseball there before joining Steve at GHS in 2002.
ASSISTANT
COACH, JOE PETRONE
Joe first started playing rugby under the direction of Coach Lapham in 1996. While playing for Coach Lapham, he was a member of the first Greenwich team to make the High School National Championships in 1997. In the summer of 1998 Joe toured New Zealand with the United States Under 19 All-American Team. Joe currently plays for the White Plains RFC. This is the beginning of his sixth year as assistant coach for the Greenwich Rugby team. Besides coaching, Joe also teaches history at Westhill High School in Stamford where he has been since 2004.
